Barbosa wins Cape Verde’s first Paralympic medal

Gracelino Tavares Barbosa earned Cape Verde’s first Paralympic medal with bronze in the men’s 400m T20 at Rio 2016. The IPC reported his 48.55-second finish behind Brazil’s Daniel Martins and Venezuela’s Luis Arturo Paiva. After receiving congratulations from President Jorge Carlos Fonseca, Barbosa spoke about using the achievement to encourage others to take up sport. He had originally aimed to reach the final; the podium transformed that ambition into a landmark for the country’s Paralympic history.
