Fernandes delivers Cape Verde’s first world athletics title

Marcio Miguel Da Costa Fernandes won Cape Verde’s first title at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha on 30 October 2015. His 56.24-metre effort in the men’s javelin F44 set an African record and placed him ahead of New Zealand’s Rory McSweeney and Iceland’s Helgi Sveinsson. The IPC reported that Fernandes was training in Bedford following a pre-London 2012 camp. His victory brought Cape Verde’s anthem to the championship podium for the first time.
