Tunisia’s Walid Ktila and Raoua Tlili won gold on the final evening of track-and-field competition at London 2012. The IPC website’s report of 8 September recorded Ktila’s second individual title and a world-record performance from Tlili in the women’s shot put F40.
A sprint double and a record throw
Ktila won the men’s 100m T34 in 15.91 seconds, adding to his earlier victory in the 200m T34. Tlili reached 9.86m with her second attempt, improving her own world record and finishing ahead of China’s Meng Genjimisu, whose best was 9.13m.
South Africa also celebrated a tightly contested sprint victory. Fanie van der Merwe won the men’s 100m T37 after a photo finish against China’s Liang Yongbin; both recorded 11.51 seconds, a world-record time. These results gave African athletes gold medals across wheelchair racing, ambulant sprinting and throwing during the closing Olympic Stadium programme.
