Tlili’s last throw secures gold on an all-African discus podium

Tunisia’s Raoua Tlili retained her discus title ahead of Morocco’s Youssra Karim and Hayat El Garaa at Tokyo 2020.

Raoua Tlili produced a world-record final throw to win the women’s discus F41 at Tokyo 2020, completing another shot put and discus gold double. The report published on the IPC website on 1 September 2021 recorded a winning distance of 37.91m.

A final-round response

Morocco’s Youssra Karim had strengthened her challenge by improving on her previous world record during the competition. Tlili’s last attempt moved the Tunisian beyond that mark and secured the title she had also won at Rio 2016. Karim took silver, with fellow Moroccan Hayat El Garaa winning bronze.

The result gave African athletes all three places on the podium. Tlili had already retained her shot put title earlier in the Tokyo programme. In the published account she recognised Karim’s contribution to the quality of the competition and described the relationship between the two throwers in warm, friendly terms.
