Rehab Ahmed celebrates home gold at Cairo’s historic Worlds

Egypt’s champion won the women’s up to 61kg event at the first World Championships held in Africa.

Egypt’s Rehab Ahmed claimed the women’s up to 61kg title at the Cairo 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships, delivering a successful home performance after a period of recovery from injury.

A winning lift in Cairo

Ahmed recorded successful attempts at 125kg and 131kg, with the latter securing gold. Her final attempt at 136kg was unsuccessful. In a November reflection published by World Para Powerlifting, she described the importance of returning to competition and lifting in familiar surroundings.

An African hosting milestone

Cairo staged the sport’s World Championships in Africa for the first time. Rookie and Next Gen competition took place on 9–10 October, followed by the elite events from 11–18 October. Ahmed’s result provided a home highlight within that programme, connecting an individual sporting achievement with a significant moment for international Para sport competition on the continent.
