IPC review records 63 African medals at Tokyo 2020

African teams won 21 golds at the delayed Games despite pandemic-related disruptions to preparation.

African athletes won 63 medals, including 21 golds, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, according to the IPC’s review published on 29 September 2021. The report placed those results against the difficulties that pandemic restrictions and limited resources had created for national-team preparations.

A continent-wide record of achievement

Algeria collected 12 medals, while Tunisia and Morocco each won 11 and Nigeria took 10. Those four countries and South Africa each secured four gold medals. The figures describe total medals separately from the gold-first ordering used in the official medal table.

Tunisia’s Walid Ktila and Raoua Tlili, together with South Africa’s Ntando Mahlangu, each won two titles. The IPC also highlighted the debut gold of Ethiopia’s Tigist Gezahagn Mengistu in the women’s 1500m T13. Its review recorded both the breadth of African participation and individual performances that produced world, Games and continental records.
