AfPC seeks African Union backing for continental Para Games

Algiers talks placed regular continental competition and national funding on the development agenda.

The African Paralympic Committee sought African Union endorsement for a recurring continental Para Games during discussions in Algiers, an IPC and AfPC report published on 9 November 2018 recorded.

A continental competition proposal

The proposal envisaged a multi-sport event every four years before the Paralympic Games. A possible first edition in late 2019 was discussed at the time. The report described a planning milestone; it did not announce a completed competition.

Connecting competition and national investment

AfPC representatives also engaged sports ministers and national sports council directors about development opportunities. Participants supported requests for annual national budgets for disability sport and NPC activities. President Leonel da Rocha Pinto emphasised pathways from entry-level participation to elite competition. Meetings with African Olympic and sports-confederation organisations were intended to build cooperation, placing the Games proposal within a broader discussion of funding, partnerships and athlete development.
