Mhlongo and Athmani lead African sprint victories at Paris 2024
South Africa and Algeria topped two men’s 100m podiums during the Games’ Sunday evening athletics session.
South Africa’s Mpumelelo Mhlongo and Algeria’s Skander Djamil Athmani each won a men’s 100m title during the evening session of 1 September at Paris 2024. The results were confirmed in World Para Athletics’ report published on the IPC website the following day.
Two sprint podiums for Africa
Mhlongo won the T44 final ahead of Cuba’s Yamel Luis Vives Suares and Malaysia’s Eddy Bernard. Athmani took gold in the T13 event, with Norway’s Salum Ageze Kashafali second and Japan’s Shuta Kawakami third.
Their victories brought two African national teams to the top of the sprint podium during the same Stade de France session. The published account also recorded a men’s 400m T11 bronze for Guillaume Atangana, representing the Refugee Paralympic Team. That medal belonged to the refugee delegation, rather than an African NPC, and is recorded separately from the national-team achievements of Mhlongo and Athmani.
