Hilton Langenhoven won the men’s long jump T12 gold medal for South Africa at Rio 2016 on 10 September. His third-round jump of 7.07m proved decisive in a final where only three centimetres separated the athletes who finished on the podium.
A narrow victory in a busy African session
Azerbaijan’s reigning world champion Kamil Aliyev took silver with 7.05m, just two centimetres behind Langenhoven. Uzbekistan’s Doniyor Saliev completed the medal positions with a best of 7.04m.
The IPC’s report placed the result in a morning session that decided seven gold medals and produced four world records. Elsewhere, Tunisia’s Hania Aidi and Fadhila Nafati took silver and bronze in the women’s shot put F54. South African sprinter Charl du Toit also broke the men’s 100m T37 world record during the heats.
