Tarbei opens World Championships with Kenyan gold

Abraham Tarbei won the first gold medal of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships for Kenya. In the men’s 5000m T46 final, he accelerated past Ethiopia’s Wondiye Fikre Indelbu on the final straight to finish in 14:48.29. Indelbu followed in 14:48.48, with fellow Ethiopian Tesfalem Gebru Kebede taking bronze. The result gave Kenya an immediate success in the opening session, which also produced five world records and 14 championship records across the day’s athletics programme.
