Rwanda’s Para sport development work earns international recognition
A SportAccord award recognised Rwanda’s use of Para sport to expand participation and social inclusion.
Rwanda’s National Paralympic Committee received SportAccord’s Spirit of Sport award for a development project designed to strengthen Paralympic sport in Africa, according to an IPC report published on 20 April 2011.
Recognition for development
The award was presented during SportAccord’s General Assembly in London. IPC President Sir Philip Craven accepted it on the Rwandan committee’s behalf. The project combined sporting development with a wider ambition to improve opportunities for people with disabilities.
Sharing knowledge across the region
The IPC highlighted Rwanda’s role in training others and supporting regional competition. Its account also linked an awareness campaign undertaken with national authorities in 2008 to the country’s disability-rights commitments. The recognition placed work beyond elite results in the international spotlight, acknowledging the contribution of an African NPC to participation, technical learning and social change.
