African athlete representatives build leadership skills in Kampala
Ten participants from nine countries developed plans to strengthen athletes’ voices at home.
Athletes from nine African countries gathered in Kampala for a workshop on representation and leadership, strengthening the knowledge and networks needed to contribute to decisions affecting their sporting communities.
Athletes at the centre
Held from 31 October to 2 November 2019, the Agitos Foundation workshop involved ten participants. Uganda’s Paralympic Committee supported the event, which was organised with the IPC Athletes’ Council. South African Paralympian Natalie du Toit was its principal facilitator.
Plans to take home
Participants examined the responsibilities of athlete representatives, compared representation models and practised communication. They assessed arrangements in their own countries and prepared action plans for use after the workshop. The programme also established a network for continued exchange. Its focus was practical: helping athletes understand how to represent colleagues effectively and participate more confidently in the organisations responsible for developing their sports.
